Cloud DNA Project Guidelines

DNA

Our Group Efforts:

  • Many people have researched the Cloud family on their own with varying degrees of success, and they often spent time going over areas which had already been investigated by previous researchers. In 1977 several researchers met and decided a united effort was needed. They formed the Cloud Family Association and in the following years it has amassed a great amount of evidence and has published quarterly journals to help its members in their research. The Cloud Family Journal can be found at libraries and is also available on a searchable CD, greatly enhancing its value and making it easier for everyone to learn about the Cloud family.
  • Both genealogy and family history researchers share the same ultimate goal — learning more about their ancestors. Our group’s cooperative effort has already helped many people learn more about their family’s history, and we intend to expand on that cooperative effort by adding DNA to our arsenal of tools.
  • The Cloud DNA Project is, by its nature, a group endeavor because it needs many tests from different family branches for its results to be useful.

To Achieve Maximum Benefit from the DNA Project:

  • We need several people from each line — their DNA signatures are compared and used to estimate the signature of their common ancestor. The signatures of those ancestors are used in the same manner to estimate signatures of even earlier ancestors as we work our way back up the family tree.
  • We need all tests expanded to at least 67 markers and preferably to 111 markers. The expanded resolution makes the test much more useful. The most comprehensive Y-chromosome test currently available is the Big-Y test, which includes over 700 STRs and thousands of SNPs, providing a major leap forward in Y-DNA testing.

What can I do to Help?

  • If you know a Cloud male, contact him and encourage him to join the Project (or give his contact information to the Project Administrator).
  • Look at the Project Pedigree Chart to see where additional tests are needed and then see if you can locate living Cloud males from that line and encourage them to join the Project
  • Locate and recruit Cloud men from other countries.
Those who are financially able are encouraged to contribute to the Fund to help pay for tests of those unable to pay for them (click on the link to Contact the DNA Project Administrator to find out about this).

We need every researcher to help us locate and contact men to participate in our DNA Project.
